Billy Collins
While U.S. Poet Laureate from 2001-2003, Billy Collins created Poetry 180 to help make poetry an important part of the daily lives of high school students. "Poems can inspire and make us think about what it means to be a member of the human race. By just spending a few minutes reading a poem each day, new worlds can be revealed. Poetry 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem each day of the 180 days of the school year. I have selected the poems you will find here with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to, and I suggest that all members of the school community be included as readers."

Michael Downend AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHERS
"I had my first assignment as a photojournalist when I was fifteen. The editor of The Dallas Post knew of my interest in photography and writing; he said, "C'mon in kid. Let's see what you can do." He sent me off to do a piece on the drover and spring lambs at a large farm in my hometown. When I turned it in, he took a look at it, said he liked the photos, wouldn't have to change a word in the piece, paid me fifteen bucks and sent me off into a world in which I've been at it ever since. With photography somewhat in hand, I went on to study writing for the visual media: television and theatre; my work has been produced in both. Along the way, I gathered some acting skills. That felicitous combination of the visual with the word has taken me through a career that found me working across these crafts. My photography has been published in various forms, e.g., a number of book covers and stills for my documentary work, has won a number of prizes, has been featured in shows, and is in permanent collections including that of the late actor and playwright, Jason Miller. I’ve written plays and television scripts; I've had acting roles ranging from the soaps, plays and movies with some notoriety in the latter. I played the scientist, Jorn [who eventually becomes a deep-fried avocado] in the world's worst science fiction film, The Robot Holocaust. Keeping it all in perspective for me is my beloved wife, the novelist and poet, Karen Blomain.
