Painting the Irish Landscape, From a Tonalist Perspective

Sue Gilkey at Anam Cara RetreatPainting the Irish Landscape, From a Tonalist Perspective
Facilitator:   Sue Gilkey (www.suegilkey.com)
One-week Residential Workshop Retreat
Arrival:  Saturday, 16 June 2012
Departure:  Saturday 23 June 2012

Open to all levels, this oil painting workshop will move between field studies and studio painting. We will start by gathering information, painting in some of the most beautiful locations on the Beara peninsula. Outdoors, the focus will be on color notes that describe the quality and temperature of the light and shadow. Ireland’s atmospheric conditions are both stunning and elusive. We will back up our information with on site photos.

Back at Anam Cara, the emphasis will switch from observation to interpretation. Using our collected information, we will develop larger paintings using a tonalist approach (i.e. George Inness, Francis Murphy, Charles Warren Eaton). We will discuss composition, value and color as a means of strengthening the emotional content. Glazing will be covered as it provides the artist with the means of achieving atmosphere.  As we move through the studio works, we will transition from thinking about representing actual places to creating a sense of place, infused with our own personal feelings, attempting to  make poetry with paint.

There will be demonstrations throughout, to show my process, along with individual attention and group discussions.
A Supply List for this workshop is posted on Gilkey's website,
